Favorite International Unit

● A few weeks ago we finished our international units, which
unit was your favorite and why? The international unit that was overall my favorite was Greece since I really enjoyed the food we made in class. Overall I think it was a great experience since I love gyros and I had the chance to learn how to make it. As well as the pie we made it was an amazing dessert and different from the regular American pies. Greece has many amazing recipes that I can’t wait to make more in the future.

What country do you wish we studied and what recipes
would you want to complete (besides Mexico, that will be
our final unit!) I wish we studied Italy since I love Italian food it’s my favorite and they have so many delicious kinds of pastas and pizzas. For example fettuccine Alfredo, spaghetti carbonara , pasta risotto, ricotta pizza. I just think they have so many among recipes that I wish we did Italy .

Greece

What have you most enjoyed about cooking recipes from other countries? What I’ve enjoyed the most of cooking other recipes has been trying new things and discovering certain foods. For example, if it wasn’t for the recipes that we make, I would most likely have never tried them before.

We have completed many recipes from other countries throughout this semester. What is one challenging aspect of cooking recipes from countries? One challenging aspect about cooking recipes from other countries has been certain ingredients included in recipes that I’ve never heard of before or have tried it. Also, the different ways certain cultures cook things.

Greece

Are you happy with your current grade?

I am currently happy with my current grade in food of the world. It’s been going well for me.

What could you do for the rest of the semester to improve your grade/maintain your current grade?

What I would do to maintain my grade for the rest of the semester is follow the recipes correctly and improve my plating skills. As well as do really well on the summative labs and other class assignments.

Japan

What was the most challenging aspect of the summative lab? ● This is our second experience with plating, what did you use from your experience last time, and what did you do differently?

For me the most challenging aspect of the sushi summative lab was when rolling the sushi since at first some of the vegetables were coming out when we rolled it. But after my group attempted it again the sushi came out perfect. One thing that I used from last times plating was adding vegetables to my plating. Then what I did differently was adding sauce to my plating to make it look more presentable.

Japan

We changed up how we did the postcards for this unit, which did you like better? The postcard that I like better now is doing one section each group. Since we have more time to add information to the certain topic we were assigned to. As well as every group isn’t repeating the same information. We all have the opportunity to have different information and take notes. Compared to the last one we couldn’t since one person presented.

Having to research all of the topics but then do small group presentations, or having to research on topic but then do a class presentation? I personally like more when we research and then do a class presentation since we all aren’t repeating the same information. Also, that we all have an opportunity to speak rather than one person speaking in a small group for everyone. Since we all get to add to the certain topic that we got assigned to do. As well as when we take notes when other groups present it’s more organized.

China

What was the most challenging aspect of the summative lab?

The most challenging part of the summative lab was probably folding the pork and vegetables into the sheet to form egg rolls. Since it took me a couple tries to achieve the prefect egg roll. As well as getting the perfect golden look without over cooking them or under cooking.

This is our first experience with plating, what would you do differently during the next opportunity?

What I would personally do different during the next opportunity of plating would be to add more color to my plate. Also, to add more food to the plate. As well as to be more creative and do something different that most people wouldn’t do with there plating.

What are your overall thoughts of our first unit? What did you like about this unit? What would you change? Overall what I liked about this unit was that I tried different foods that I’ve never tried before. Also, I got to taste different Chinese foods than what I would usually get at a Chinese restaurant. Though I liked the unit what I would change would be changing the chow mein recipe. But overall I liked all the recipes and now I know more about the different foods Chinese culture eats.

China

Why did you decide to take foods of the world?
I decided to take foods of the world since I found it very interesting learning about the different foods people eat around the world. As well as trying different foods that I’ve never tried before. Also, by learning how to cook different dishes that aren’t my culture and most likely if I didn’t take this class I would of have never had the chance to learn how to cook Chinese food or any other culture food. This class will help be discover new foods or different foods I may find to love after cooking it.
What are you concerned about and/or most excited for in the class?
One thing that I’m concern about is not liking different dishes that cultures make since at times I many be a very picky eater. But overall what I’m the most excited about will be learning about many different cultures besides just there food. Also, by just being able to cook since I don’t as much at home. As well as improving to be better at cooking.
Which unit sounds the most interesting to you and why?

The unit that sounds the most interesting to me is India since I’ve never tried Indian food before or have ever cooked it. Since I personally find there culture so interesting especially there dances and beautiful dresses that the women wear. But I’ve heard that many of there dishes are healthy meals and delicious. Overall India is a beautiful country with many interesting dishes.
